Where to Go in Europe
The fantastic Borough Market in London is one of my favorite foodie destinations in Europe.
Best Places to Go in Europe
- My favorite countries to visit in Europe are Greece and Italy.
- My favorite cities in Europe are London, Paris, Barcelona, and Florence.
- The best destinations for a honeymoon in Europe are Santorini and the magical cave hotels in Matera.
- The best beaches in Europe are in Greece. : My favorite places in Europe for families are London with kids, Paris with kids, Barcelona with kids, Amsterdam with kids, Rome with kids, and Naxos with kids.
- Top Tip for Visiting Europe: Arrive and depart from different cities to save the time, hassle, and expense of retracing your steps to catch your return flight. For example, fly into London, train to Paris, train to Amsterdam, fly home from Amsterdam. The best destinations for first-time visitors are those that have a direct flight from home (or as close to direct as possible) and are close to each within Europe â cutting down on costs and travel time. : July and August have wonderful weather but are busy everywhere in Europe so if you have the option (and families usually donât) then June and September are better as the weather is remains great and every beach on the Mediterranean is still wonderful. For outdoor sightseeing April, May, October, and early November are pleasant in most of Europe.
- If youâre a museum lover then early December, January, February, and early March see wonderfully short lines at the top attractions in London, Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin, Barcelona, Madrid, Florence, Milan, and Rome. The weather can be miserable but these big cities have lots to see indoors.
- My favorite book on modern Europe is Tony Judtâs fantastic Postwar: A History of Europe Since 1945.
- The most magical things to do in Europe are island hopping in the Greek Islands and staying at an Agriturismo in Tuscany.

Myself and a friend are looking at a two week holiday in May â we were thinking of spending a week in Santorini and then possibly another nearby close island? We would like to stay in a hotel with Caldera view, however mobility with steps is an issue! Do you know of any mid range hotels in Oia or Imerovigli that have few or no steps to access rooms etc. i appreciate that being built into a mountain this is probably a challenging request! Mobility on flat ground is not an issue. Many thanks
Fira has several good hotels with few or no stairs: Aria Suites, Atlantis, and Aressana. In Imerovigli Kasimatis is a good choice. In Oia try Aspaki by Art Maisons.
Come and visit Bulgaria! The country of yogurt and rose oil. Doesnât matter what will be the season. Mountains and beaches. Visit the oldest city in Europe â Plovdiv. The oldest country in Europe. Some of the places offered here are not that much good as they present them. Travelling years already and have been visited all the European countries. My opinion for some countries. From 1 to 10: Spain 8, France 6, Netherlands 6, England 6, Italy 7, Turkey 7, Portugal 7, Greece 6, Germany 7.
Wonderful. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Dave, Iâm planning a trip to Germany for this coming October but would like to spend a few days (2 to 3 days) in another city or country at the end of the trip before returning to the US. What would your top suggestions be for places to visit if you only have a few days?
Paris would be right at the top of my list. Amsterdam, London, Florence, and Barcelona are all wonderful too (and many more). Take a look at flights and connections to see what works best for your itinerary and use that as a tie-breaker.
What are the best cities to visit in Europe for a first-time solo female traveler?
For all first-time visitors to Europe top cities would be Paris, Florence, London, Amsterdam, Rome, and Barcelona. Iâd recommend visiting at least one smaller place to get a more local feel of European life. Good suggestions include Galway, Perugia, Utrecht, and Seville â although the list of quality places is very very long.
Hi Dave. Do you think it would be too cold to go Greek Island hopping in April/May? And how many nights per island do you think would be required?
April is too cold for swimming. Early May can start to have some warm/hot days when swimming is possible though the water will still be cool. But if by island hopping you mean sightseeing and exploring the islands then late April and early May are wonderful on the Greek islands. The weather is great, crowds are smaller, and costs are cheaper.
We are looking for a beach holiday destination for September. We want good weather and wonderful beaches. Good food and a fun atmosphere (but not big parties) are also important. Where would you suggest?
The Greek islands have the best beaches in Europe. If you want to ferry hop around several islands then the Cyclades (Naxos, Paros, Mykonos, Santorini, and several more) are best. If you only want one island (with great beaches) then go with Naxos, Mykonos, Crete, or Rhodes â or smaller islands like Ios, Sifnos, Antiparos, or Ikaria.
We have a week to spend in Amsterdam as part of our honeymoon. We plan on 3 or 4 days in Amsterdam but would like to do an overnight bike trip outside of Amsterdam â probably two days but could also do a three day trip if needed. Weâre in decent shape (can easily walk 5 to 10 miles in a day) but are only on a bike a few times a year. What bike trips would you recommend outside of Amsterdam?
My two favorite bike trips from Amsterdam are:
Amsterdam to Edam â Start by taking the free ferry from the train station across the canal to North Amsterdam. From there itâs a 90 minute ride to Edam (be sure to ride through the small town of Broek in Waterland.) Stay at the Hotel and Restaurant de Fortuna (idyllic location on a small canal, plenty of bike parking) in the center of this charming town. The restaurant at the hotel is fantastic. The next morning catch the ferry from Volendam to Marken and then return to Amsterdam along the sea coast.
Amsterdam to Utrecht â This ride is a bit longer (about 2.5 to 3 hours, one way). If you put Amsterdam to Utrecht into Google Maps youâll get two different bike routes (mostly on opposite sides of the canal but departing a bit more close to Amsterdam), take one route to Utrecht and the opposite route back as they feel very different (but both wonderful rides). Utrecht is a medium-sized college town with nightlife, local attractions, and lots of restaurants along the main canal. Stay at the Grand Hotel Karel V (center of town, plenty of bike parking) which is fabulous.
Both of these rides are wonderful and highly recommended.
Traveling from London to Paris and then Rome. What is the best, easiest, fastest way to get between the 3 cities â fly, train, or car rental?
From London to Paris take the Eurostar. From Paris to Rome get a cheap flight â probably with Ryanair or Easy Jet.

The 10 best places to visit in Europe in 2021
Predicting how travel will look in 2021 is a foolâs errand. So travelling in 2021 wonât just be a chance to reconnect with ourselves and feel the buzz of arriving in a new place and a new headspace, alive to new possibilities. In a way, it will be our chance to vote for the kind of world we want to live in: one of sustainable businesses, ecosystems and communities, rather than of individuals staring into the addictively hollow void of a smartphone screen. It will also be a chance for many of us to remember that we live in a continent that is one of the great patchworks of humanity and geography. Hereâs where weâll be going in Europe in 2021, and it feels increasingly imperative that we all get out and do the same â and make a vote for joy. The Azores
With the possible exception of Iceland, nowhere in Europe does geological drama quite like the Azores â the Hawaii of the mid-Atlantic, with densely forested islands fringed by craggy cliffs that seem to rise out of the nothingness like giant green knees from a primordial bath. The archipelago, 950 miles from the coast of parent country Portugal, is a place of volcanic craters, sulphuric hot springs, breaching whales and surf breaks overlooked by epic stacks. The archipelago of biospheres and marine reserves has also been a quiet paragon of sustainable tourism, a sort of European answer to Costa Rica.
There are ferries and small planes to islands such as Faial, Pico and SĂŁo Jorge, but most of the action happens on Sao Miguel, which is well stocked with good places to stay. The classic double-header is to spend a few nights each at two sister hotels: the Azor, with crisp mod-boutique geometry and a rooftop pool overlooking the harbour in the main town of Ponta Delgada; and the Furnas Boutique Hotel up in the mud-bubbling volcanic centre of the island, where the star of the show is the black-stone, Japanese-style thermal pool.
In Vila Franca do Campo, the whale-watching and diving hotspot half an hour along the south coast from Ponta Delgada, Convento de SĂŁo Francisco is a 10-room boutique in an elegantly austere 17th-century convent. Other highlights include the Sete Cidades Lake Lodge, a series of timber lodges on a canoe-ready lake in the wild north-west; and the Santa BĂĄrbara Eco-Beach resort , a place of low-slung concrete modernism overlooking a long surf beach on the north coast.
By necessity, the food is uniformly locavore, from the islandsâ famous cheeses to rare-but-delicious fish such as wreckfish and blue-mouth rockfish, and cozido das Furnas, a seven-meat stew slow-baked in Furnasâs volcanic earth. This is a timeless sort of place; a deep-nature escape, which feels about right in 2021.
Dubrovnik and its surrounds, Croatia
Dubrovnik may be a little overrun with Game Of Thrones tourists, but thereâs always been a certain magic to this limestone citadel on the Adriatic. And whatâs often forgotten is what a great starting point it is for a proper adventure. To the south, itâs less than an hourâs drive past the sleepy harbour towns of the Dubrovnik Riviera to Montenegro â a country which has gradually been rediscovering its post-war mojo, especially with the upcoming arrival of a biophilic-modernist hotel from Janu, Amanâs new younger sister brand. To the north, itâs less than three hours to Mostar, an exquisite Bosnian town of fairylit millhouse restaurants and Ottoman stone bridges, not far from the Kravice waterfalls, with a turquoise swimmable lagoon surrounded by Niagara-like falls.
But the other way to go is seaward, towards the car-free, tumbledown Elaphiti islands of KoloÄep, Sipan and Lopud, easily reached by local ferries. The one to visit in 2021 is Lopud, an island of Renaissance-era stone houses, exotic gardens and ruined fortresses. Its Franciscan monastery is now open as the five-suite Lopud 1483, after a painstaking 20-year renovation by Swiss art patron and philanthropist Francesca Thyssen-Bornemisza. She and her family have filled the 5,000-square-metre monastery with Renaissance and contemporary art, a Franciscan pharmacy and a meditation garden designed by an Arctic shaman, while preserving the rough plasterwork and patina of the ancient monastery.

SkÄne, Sweden
Swedenâs southernmost county rarely gets the coverage it deserves â in large part because so much buzz is drawn across the Ăresund Bridge from Malmö to Copenhagen. But SkĂ„ne is well-worth exploring, from the patchwork charm of the city to the lakes, wineries and Nantucket-esque clapboard coastal towns of the fertile countryside, often referred to as Swedenâs larder.
Malmö has many of the things going for it that have put Copenhagen and Amsterdam on every most-liveable list going: young, bikeable, streaked with canals and concrete coffee joints, but also home to a beautifully preserved Dutch-Renaissance old town. Yet it remains more mixed than the defiantly tasteful Danish city across the water, especially in areas such as MöllevĂ„ngen, an arty, multicultural part of town known to locals as Falafel City. And Swedenâs relatively relaxed Covid-19 regulations have meant that hip locavore haunts such as Bastard, Vollmers and the HöganĂ€s Saluhall food hall, as well as zero-waste lunch favourite Restaurang Spill, have held onto their mojo heading into 2021.
A taste of SkĂ„ne produce is a good precursor to a journey to the countryside: whether south to the beach huts and marram-grass dunes of the Skanör-Falsterbo peninsula, or north to the clapboard seaside town of Mölle, where the Grand HĂŽtel Mölle grandly looks over the pebble beach and the wild Kullaberg Nature Reserve, with its porpoises and lighthouse hikes. Beyond Mölle, BĂ„stad is another classic seaside town, with a traditional kallbadhus (cold bathing house) spa at the end of a wooden pier, belonging to the heritage-soaked Hotel Skansen. All across the county, which is generally quieter than the Stockholm archipelago, thereâs a low-key sense of provenance at places such as at the zero-waste Hörte Brygga in the south-west, with its wonderful water-side garden in the summer. Like a European answer to New England, this is the most genteel of escapes.
