Iceland is a land of stunning natural beauty, and there’s no better time to visit than in the summer, when the days are long and the weather is at its best. I’ve been fortunate enough to travel to Iceland several times, and I’ve always been amazed by the country’s incredible landscapes. From towering mountains and glaciers to cascading waterfalls and geothermal hot springs, Iceland has something to offer everyone. If you’re planning a trip to Iceland in the summer, here are a few of my favorite places to visit⁚
Snæfellsnes Peninsula
The Snæfellsnes Peninsula is a stunning region in western Iceland that’s often referred to as “Iceland in miniature” because it offers a little bit of everything the country has to offer, from glaciers and volcanoes to waterfalls and black sand beaches. I spent a few days exploring the peninsula on my last trip to Iceland, and I was amazed by the diversity of the landscape.
One of the highlights of my trip was a visit to Snæfellsjökull National Park, home to the Snæfellsjökull glacier and volcano. I hiked to the summit of the glacier, and the views from the top were incredible. I could see for miles in every direction, and I felt like I was on top of the world.
Another highlight of my trip was a visit to the Vatnshellir lava cave. I’ve been to a few lava caves before, but Vatnshellir is by far the most impressive. The cave is huge, and it’s filled with beautiful ice formations. I highly recommend taking a guided tour of the cave, as the guides are very knowledgeable and can tell you all about the cave’s history and geology.
If you’re looking for a place to stay on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, I recommend the Hotel Budir. The hotel is located on a beautiful black sand beach, and the rooms are comfortable and stylish. I also recommend the restaurant at the hotel, which serves delicious Icelandic cuisine.

Golden Circle
The Golden Circle is a popular tourist route in southern Iceland that takes you to three of the country’s most iconic natural attractions⁚ Þingvellir National Park, the Gullfoss waterfall, and the Geysir geothermal area. I’ve been to the Golden Circle several times, and it’s always a great day trip from Reykjavík.
Þingvellir National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is home to the Þingvellir Parliament, which was founded in 930 AD and is considered to be the oldest parliament in the world. The park is also located in a rift valley between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, and you can actually see the two plates pulling apart as you walk through the park.
Gullfoss is one of the most powerful waterfalls in Europe, and it’s a truly awe-inspiring sight. The waterfall is located on the Hvítá river, and it plunges 32 meters into a deep canyon; I recommend walking to the bottom of the canyon for the best views of the waterfall.
The Geysir geothermal area is home to several geysers, including the Strokkur geyser, which erupts every few minutes. I was amazed by the power of the geyser, and it was incredible to see it erupt up close.

One of the highlights of the South Coast is the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. The lagoon is filled with icebergs that have calved off from the Vatnajökull glacier, and it’s a truly magical place to visit. I recommend taking a boat tour of the lagoon, so you can get up close to the icebergs and see them from all angles.

Reykjavík
Reykjavík is the capital of Iceland, and it’s a great place to start your trip to the country. The city is home to a variety of museums, art galleries, and restaurants, and there’s always something going on.
One of the most popular attractions in Reykjavík is the Hallgrímskirkja church. The church is one of the tallest buildings in Iceland, and it offers stunning views of the city and the surrounding area. I recommend taking the elevator to the top of the church, so you can get the best views.
