## Is Travel to South Africa Permitted?

Current Travel Status

As of June 2023, South Africa’s borders are open to international travelers. However, certain travel restrictions and requirements are in place to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.

Visa Requirements

Citizens of most countries do not require a visa for tourist stays of up to 90 days. A list of countries exempt from visa requirements can be found on the Department of Home Affairs website.

Entry Requirements

Negative COVID-19 Test: All travelers must provide a negative COVID-19 PCR test result obtained no more than 72 hours before departure. Alternatively, a valid COVID-19 vaccination certificate can be presented.
Health Screening: Upon arrival, travelers may undergo temperature checks and health screenings.
Documentation: Visitors must have a valid passport with at least 6 months remaining validity and a return or onward ticket.

Quarantine Requirements

Vaccinated Travelers: Travelers who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 are not required to quarantine.
Unvaccinated Travelers: Unvaccinated travelers may be required to quarantine for 5 days upon arrival. This requirement may be waived if the traveler presents a negative COVID-19 test result obtained within 24 hours of arrival.

Travel Restrictions

High-Risk Countries: Travelers from countries with a high incidence of COVID-19 may be subject to additional restrictions, such as enhanced health screenings or mandatory quarantine.
Land Borders: Land borders with neighboring countries may be closed or have limited entry points. Travelers should check with their respective border authorities for the latest information.

Additional Considerations

Travel Insurance: It is highly recommended to purchase travel insurance before traveling to South Africa.
Health Precautions: Travelers should follow local health and safety guidelines, including wearing a mask in public places, practicing social distancing, and maintaining good hygiene.
Visa Extensions: Visitors may apply for an extension of their visa beyond the initial 90-day period. They should request an extension well before their current visa expires.

Latest Updates

The travel restrictions and requirements are subject to change based on the global COVID-19 situation. Travelers should check with their embassy or consulate and the South African Department of Home Affairs website for the most up-to-date information before planning their trip.
