Can Americans Travel to Europe Right Now? What You Need to Know

As the world went into lockdown and borders shut down in the blink of an eye, many people pondered when life would return back to normal. Intrepid travelers, on the other hand, also wondered when their favorite countries would open once again.

Read Post  Autumn in Europe: The Only Packing List You’ll Ever Need

More than a year later, borders are reopening, flights are resuming their most popular routes, and travelers are making up for lost time by planning a summer full of trips. In fact, the European Union recently announced that all 27 member countries are opening up to Americans just in time for the tourist season.

However, as adventurers dive back into traveling, there are a handful of very important changes that come along with this “new normal.”

Flight landing in Switzerland

Namely, many European countries are asking travelers to undergo extra testing, provide proof of vaccinations, and adhere to new entry requirements for various establishments. Later in 2022, travelers will also need to have a visa waiver (such as the ETIAS Germany for Americans) if they wish to travel to Europe.

Although there are new rules and hurdles to pass through, this hasn’t stopped eager American travelers from booking a ticket and flying across the Atlantic.

For those who are planning to travel to Europe in the near future, this is what you need to know:

Europe has opened just in time for tourist season — however, there are new entry requirements for incoming travelers. Learn more about them here.

Each Country Has Their Own Requirements

As mentioned in the introduction, there are 27 member states of the European Union and, naturally, each country will have their own approach to reopening.

Some countries, such as Greece, allow all eligible travelers to enter as long as they have filled out a Passenger Locator Form and one of the following: a negative PCR test (taken up to 72 hours before arrival), proof of recovery from COVID-19, or proof of vaccination.

Other countries, however, are much more stringent when it comes to visitors. For instance, France only allows vaccinated travelers who can produce a negative test result, while those who are unvaccinated need to have a compelling reason and quarantine once they enter the country.

Due to these distinct differences, it is important to research which countries you plan to visit beforehand and plan accordingly.

Approved Vaccines

As news broke of the European Union reopening, president of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen stated that, “All 27 member states will accept, unconditionally, all those who are vaccinated with vaccines that are approved by EMA.”

At the moment, the EMA-approved vaccines include Moderna, AstraZeneca, Pfizer/BioNTech, and Johnson & Johnson.

Von der Leyen continued, “The Americans, as far as I can see, use European Medicines Agency-approved vaccines.”

Although there are currently four approved vaccines, the European Medicines Agency is currently researching and trialing other vaccines that may soon join the list.

International travel during pandemic

Vaccine Passports

One of the biggest developments in European tourism is the advent of vaccine passports.

These so-called ‘travel passes’ will be digital apps or QR codes that prove travelers and locals have been vaccinated, recovered from the coronavirus recently, or have proof of a negative test.

Many countries, including Australia, Japan, Denmark, and Poland, already have their own local version of COVID certificates, with many more following suit.

Some countries have even started to implement these digital passes. For example, France recently passed a mandate that required people to show their COVID health pass if they wish to enter a restaurant, nightclub, cafe, or take a long-distance train ride.

Tourism experts believe that vaccination passports will be the future of travel, as they save time during passport control, can quickly indicate a person’s COVID-19 status, and ensure seamless border crossings.

Travel to Non Europe Union Countries

Those who are unvaccinated (or simply want a change of scenery) could also look into the possibility of traveling to non-European Union countries, such as those in the Balkans or Eastern Europe.

The majority of these countries only require a negative test, and some (such as Albania) do not have any entry requirements at all.

Albania’s neighbor, Montenegro, has been making waves during the pandemic thanks to its lax entry rules, EU-like infrastructure, and comfortable conditions for digital nomads.

Turkey, a popular summertime destination, is also on many travelers’ radar this tourist season. It’s conveniently located between Europe and Asia, has a global airport hub (Istanbul International Airport), and can keep even the pickiest tourist busy for their entire trip.

Returning to the United States

Although nobody wants their vacation to end, we all need to go back home sooner or later.

When traveling during the pandemic, there are a few things to keep in mind when returning to the USA.

All air passengers must produce a negative test result (or documentation of recovery from COVID-19) before boarding their flight to the United States — including those who are fully vaccinated.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also recommends getting retested 3-5 days after international travel and self-quarantine for 7 days after travel.

Americans can still travel to European countries, although each country makes their own decisions about who can enter and what precautions are required to help prevent the spread of Covid-19.

Before deciding to travel to Europe, check the testing and vaccination requirements for your destination. Be sure to also consider any countries you transit as there may be testing or vaccination requirements even if you don’t leave the airport. You’ll also want to travel masks with you at all times, since some forms of transportation as well as public and private businesses may require them to enter. Many European countries specifically call for FFP2 masks (or similar-style masks such as KF94 or N95s).

Here are some of the latest European travel rules and restrictions for U.S. travelers.

France

U.S. citizens can travel to France with full proof of vaccination , which you may have to show to your airline and to border patrol.

Spain

U.S. citizens are not required to quarantine when arriving in Spain, but proof of vaccination or a recent negative test is required. Your test must be from within 72 hours prior to departure for PCR tests or 24 hours for antigen tests. Spain recently revised their requirements to define fully vaccinated travelers as those who received their final dose 14-270 days prior to arrival. Therefore, some travelers may need to obtain a booster dose prior to travel to Spain.

Before departure, you must complete a Health Control Form (FCS) and obtain and download the QR code to show at boarding and health controls upon arrival in Spain.

Requirements for Traveling to the U.S.

As of June 12, U.S. citizens returning from Europe to the United States no longer need to provide a negative Covid-19 test in order to return home. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) lifted the previous mandate that had required travelers to supply a negative Covid test or documentation of recovery in order to re-enter the U.S.

However, if you’re not a U.S. citizen or are on an immigrant visa, you’ll still need to show proof of vaccination to fly to the U.S. from Europe.

The coronavirus pandemic caused international travel to grind to a halt in 2020. In March 2020, the U.S. Department of State imposed a “Level 4: Do Not Travel” advisory instructing Americans “to avoid all international travel due to the global impact of COVID-19.”

The good news is that this advisory was lifted at the beginning of August 2020 and since then, many countries have gradually reopened borders and welcomed tourists back. Some countries currently allow Americans — vaccinated or not — to visit, while the list of countries accepting vaccinated tourists from the U.S. is constantly expanding.

We’ve compiled a regularly updated list of more than 155 countries that are accepting American visitors, along with local government restrictions, rules, and safety measures related to COVID-19. We’ve also included the State Department’s individual advisory level for each country to help you make an educated decision about where to go.

Countries Where Americans Can Travel

Many nations have viewed American travelers skeptically because the U.S. was one of the worst-hit globally by COVID-19. However, despite fits and starts, “COVID-19 spikes,” and more, the U.S. has managed to get a sizable portion of the population vaccinated against COVID-19, which has opened up more opportunities for international travel.

In fact, there is a growing list of over 155 countries that are now accepting American travelers.

Many countries require proof of vaccination and/or evidence that you have tested negatively for COVID-19. Each country is different in terms of requirements for when this test needs to be taken, but most require an RT-PCR test. This test requires getting a nasal swab sent to a lab for processing and isn’t the kind that issues rapid results. Plan accordingly as results from these tests can take a few days to come back.

In addition, now that boosters are widely available, many countries are building this into their definition of what it means to be “fully vaccinated.” This could mean that your initial doses are no longer sufficient to qualify if a certain amount of time has passed (usually over 270 days or 9 goths).

Since many young children still aren’t eligible to receive COVID-19 vaccines, many countries allow children to abide by the same quarantine rules that are applied to parents. Be sure to research the specific requirements by country if you are traveling with children.

Update: As of December 6, 2021, the CDC requires all air passengers arriving in the U.S. from a foreign country to provide a negative COVID-19 test or proof of having recovered from COVID-19 within 90 days to the airline before boarding the flight to the U.S. Regardless of vaccination status, you must provide a negative test taken within 1 day of departure. This ruling applies to U.S. citizens/residents and travelers alike, though non-U.S. citizens and non-U.S. immigrants must be fully vaccinated (unless exception criteria are met, such as children under 18 years old). This means that if you’re traveling internationally, you must figure out how to get tested abroad prior to flying back to the U.S.

Read on to see the regulations and other requirements by country, including a link to the official U.S. Embassy website for each country. Be sure to review these pages thoroughly before you leave in case there are any last-minute changes!

  • Proof of full vaccination
  • Evidence of recovery from COVID-19
  • A negative PCR test taken within 72 hours or a rapid test taken within 48 hours prior to arrival

  • Pay $20 on arrival for a rapid antigen test upon arrival at the airport

Anguilla

The island requires all visitors to be fully vaccinated for at least 14 days before entering (pregnant women and children under 18 years of age are exceptions to this requirement). In addition, you’ll have to apply to be pre-authorized to travel, submit a negative COVID-19 test within 2 days for a rapid test and within 3 days for a PCR test before arriving, and prove that you have health insurance to cover potential medical expenses.

If it has been more than 6 months since your original vaccination and you, have not received a booster, you will also be required to test on arrival, at your own expense.

Antigua and Barbuda

All visitors 18 and up must be fully vaccinated with a World Health Organization-approved vaccine to enter. Unvaccinated minors (ages 5 to 18) must present a negative result from an antigen or PCR test taken 4 days prior to arrival.

For vaccinated travelers, there is no requirement to test prior to arrival, but if you have COVID-19 symptoms, you may have to isolate yourself upon arrival.

Argentina

Fully-vaccinated Americans over the age of 18 who are fully vaccinated at least 14 days prior to entry are allowed to travel to Argentina. You must also provide a negative COVID-19 test taken 72 hours before departure and sign a waiver noting that you have insurance that covers COVID-19.

Armenia

You may select 1 of 2 options for entering Armenia. If you are over the age of 6, you must:

  1. Provide proof of full vaccination
  2. Present a negative COVID-19 test with results from 72 hours of arrival

If neither option works, you may also take a test on arrival and self-isolate until you receive a negative result. See more information on Armenia’s COVID-19 travel page.

Final Thoughts

As you can see, many countries require proof of vaccination or have more difficult testing and/or quarantine requirements for unvaccinated visitors. Some have mandatory quarantines in place, and most require a negative COVID-19 test (PCR is normally preferred). The definite of what is considered “Fully-vaccinated” also varies by country — some of which require a booster after a certain amount of time has passed since the initial doses have been given.

Ultimately, which international travel destinations are considered “open” depends on how much time you have to quarantine, ease of access to any required testing, and what you consider to be an advisable location.

It’s also worth pointing out that since the pandemic is ongoing, open access to travel can change at any time and with little warning. Lockdowns have been previously reenacted in countries, including Spain and China, so you should be prepared for this possibility if you decide to travel internationally.

About Christy Rodriguez

Christy was born in St. Louis, Missouri, but lived in Texas for the majority of her life. Now, work has her living in San Diego with her husband, daughter, and yellow lab. Her first international travel experience was for a summer study abroad program in Italy. After that, she knew that she was destined to travel as much as possible. Luckily, her husband worked at Southwest Airlines, so they were introduced to the exciting world of “non-rev” travel.

I thought Peru removed the quarantine requirement?

Hi Andrew, you’re correct! As of March 15, 2021, the quarantine requirement was removed if you provide a negative test and receive a negative result after their first day of arrival. (You will still need to be quarantined briefly until you get your test result back.) We’ve updated the post to reflect this. Thanks!

Germany should be added to this list. Only requires PCR (72) or Antigen (48) for US travelers.

The date says that this was updated August 31st 2021 but but a ton of the information is completely incorrect. Bulgaria and Portugal have both closed and several other countries are requiring things that are not on here.

Hi Gwen! As of today, U.S. travelers are still allowed in both Bulgaria and Portugal. We just updated Bulgaria’s post to reflect new entry requirements that went into place as of September 1, 2021.

We invite you to check out the links to the embassy’s websites for the most current information. Thanks for reading!
