Elephant Rocks State Park

Elephant Rocks State Park is a hidden gem in the Missouri Ozarks. Its namesake rock formations, towering sandstone boulders shaped by wind and water, create a surreal landscape that’s perfect for hiking and exploration. I spent a day traversing the park’s trails, marveling at the unique rock formations and lush forests. The highlight was reaching the summit of Elephant Rock, where panoramic views of the surrounding wilderness unfolded before me.

I started my hike on the Cave Trail, which led me through a dense forest and past several small caves. The trail then ascended to the base of Elephant Rock, where I took a break to admire its massive size. From there, I scrambled up the rocks to the summit, using handholds and footholds carved into the stone. The view from the top was breathtaking, and I could see for miles in every direction.

After enjoying the view, I descended Elephant Rock and continued on the River Trail, which followed the Big River for a short distance. The trail then turned away from the river and led me back to the trailhead. The hike was relatively easy, but the uneven terrain and rock scrambling made it more challenging than I expected. Overall, I had a great time hiking at Elephant Rocks State Park, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a unique and scenic hiking experience.

I’ve had the pleasure of hiking many of Missouri’s best trails, and one that always stands out is the Ozark Trail. This epic trail traverses the entire state, offering a diverse range of scenery and challenges. I’ve hiked sections of the trail in both the eastern and western parts of the state, and each experience has been unique and memorable.

One of my favorite hikes on the Ozark Trail was a three-day backpacking trip I did in the Mark Twain National Forest. I started at the trailhead near Ava, Missouri, and hiked east towards Eminence. The trail wound its way through dense forests, past sparkling streams, and over rugged hills. I camped at designated campsites along the way, and each evening I enjoyed cooking dinner over a campfire and gazing up at the stars.

The highlight of my hike was reaching the Current River, which the Ozark Trail follows for several miles. I spent a day hiking along the river, enjoying the cool breeze and the sound of the water rushing over the rocks. I also took a swim in one of the many swimming holes along the river, which was a refreshing way to cool off after a long day of hiking.

Overall, my backpacking trip on the Ozark Trail was an amazing experience. The scenery was beautiful, the hiking was challenging but rewarding, and I loved the feeling of being surrounded by nature. I would highly recommend the Ozark Trail to any hiker looking for a challenging and rewarding adventure.

This challenging 5.5-mile loop trail ascends to the summit of Taum Sauk Mountain, offering panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. I hiked the Taum Sauk Mountain Trail on a clear autumn day, and the views from the summit were breathtaking.
