The Gauley River is one of the most popular whitewater rafting destinations in the United States. The river offers a variety of rapids, from Class III to Class V, and the scenery is stunning. The best time to raft the Gauley River is during the spring (April-May) or fall (September-October). During these months, the water levels are typically higher, and the rapids are more challenging. If you are looking for a more challenging rafting experience, I recommend rafting the Gauley River during the spring or fall.

Spring (April-May)

The spring is a great time to raft the Gauley River. The water levels are typically higher during this time of year, which makes for more challenging and exciting rapids. The scenery is also beautiful in the spring, as the new leaves are just starting to emerge on the trees.

I rafted the Gauley River in the spring a few years ago with a group of friends. We had a blast! The rapids were challenging, but we were able to navigate them safely. The scenery was breathtaking, and we saw all sorts of wildlife along the way.

Here are some tips for rafting the Gauley River in the spring⁚

  • Be sure to check the water levels before you go. The river can be dangerous if the water levels are too high or too low.
  • Dress in layers, as the weather can change quickly in the mountains.
  • Bring plenty of water and snacks.
  • Be prepared to get wet!

Winter (November-March)

The Gauley River is not typically rafted during the winter months (November-March). The water levels are typically too low, and the weather is too cold. However, there are a few companies that offer guided winter rafting trips on the Gauley River. These trips are typically only offered on the lower Gauley River, which has less challenging rapids.

I have never rafted the Gauley River in the winter, but I have rafted other rivers in the winter. Winter rafting is a unique experience. The scenery is beautiful, and the rapids are often more challenging than they are in the summer. However, it is important to be prepared for the cold weather.

My Most Memorable Gauley River Rafting Trip
My most memorable Gauley River rafting trip was in the spring of 2019. The water levels were high, and the rapids were running strong. We had a great group of people, and we had a lot of fun.

We started our trip at the Upper Gauley put-in. The first rapid we came to was Pillow Rock. Pillow Rock is a Class V rapid, and it is one of the most challenging rapids on the Gauley River. We scouted the rapid from the shore, and then we decided to run it.
We paddled hard, and we made it through the rapid without any problems. We were all excited, and we continued down the river.

We ran the rest of the rapids on the Upper Gauley without any problems. We had a great time, and we were all glad that we had decided to raft the Gauley River in the spring.
