This 7-day itinerary, focusing on North Sikkim, is designed for the independent traveller seeking solitude, stunning vistas, and a deeper connection with nature. Prepare yourself for a journey of self-discovery as you delve into the heart of the Himalayas, discovering the magic of travelling solo in Sikkim.
Day 1: Arrival in Gangtok & Acclimatization
Begin your journey by arriving at Bagdogra Airport (IXB) or New Jalpaiguri Railway Station (NJP). Arrange for a pre-booked shared taxi or private car to Gangtok, the capital city of Sikkim (approx. 4-5 hours). Upon arrival, check into your hotel and spend the rest of the day acclimatizing to the altitude. Gangtok sits at a considerable elevation, and allowing your body to adjust is crucial before venturing further north.
- Afternoon: Take a leisurely stroll through MG Marg, Gangtok’s pedestrian-only street, enjoying the vibrant atmosphere and sampling local delicacies.
- Evening: Enjoy a traditional Sikkimese dinner at a local restaurant. Momos and Thukpa are must-tries.
Day 2: Gangtok Sightseeing
Dedicate this day to exploring the highlights of Gangtok before heading to North Sikkim. You’ll need to secure an Inner Line Permit (ILP) for North Sikkim travel, so factor in time for that.
- Morning: Visit the Enchey Monastery, known for its stunning architecture and serene ambience. Afterwards, explore the Directorate of Handicrafts & Handlooms, showcasing traditional Sikkimese art and craft.
- Afternoon: Head to the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology, a renowned research institute dedicated to the study of Tibetan language and culture. Consider visiting the Do Drul Chorten Stupa and the adjacent Orchid Sanctuary.
- Evening: Relax and prepare for your journey to North Sikkim the next day. Double-check your permits and pack accordingly.
Day 3: Gangtok to Lachen (via Chungthang)
Today marks the beginning of your North Sikkim adventure. You’ll be travelling to Lachen, a small village that serves as a base for exploring Gurudongmar Lake and Chopta Valley. The journey involves a significant altitude gain.
The drive from Gangtok to Lachen (approx. 6-7 hours) is scenic but can be bumpy. You’ll pass through Chungthang, a small town at the confluence of the Lachen Chu and Lachung Chu rivers. Chungthang has historical and religious significance and is a good place to stop for lunch. Upon arrival in Lachen, check into your homestay or hotel. The infrastructure in Lachen is basic, so expect simple accommodations. Rest and acclimatize to the altitude.
Day 4: Lachen to Gurudongmar Lake & Return
This is arguably the highlight of your North Sikkim trip. Gurudongmar Lake, one of the highest lakes in the world, is a breathtaking sight. Start your day very early (around 4 AM) to avoid road closures and potential altitude sickness. The drive from Lachen to Gurudongmar Lake takes approximately 3-4 hours. The high altitude (over 17,000 feet) requires caution. Spend a limited time at the lake due to the thin air. Enjoy the stunning views of the turquoise waters and snow-capped peaks.
After Gurudongmar Lake, return to Lachen. Consider visiting the Lachen Monastery in the afternoon if you feel up to it. Rest and prepare for your journey to Lachung the next day.
Day 5: Lachen to Lachung
Today, you’ll travel from Lachen to Lachung (approx. 2-3 hours). Lachung is another small village in North Sikkim and serves as a base for exploring Yumthang Valley and Zero Point. The drive is relatively short, allowing you time to relax and explore Lachung. Check into your hotel or homestay. In the afternoon, take a stroll around the village and interact with the locals.
Day 6: Yumthang Valley & Zero Point
Today’s adventure takes you to Yumthang Valley, also known as the “Valley of Flowers.” The valley is particularly stunning during spring (March-May) when it’s carpeted with wildflowers. Continue to Zero Point (Yumesamdong), located at an even higher altitude. Remember to acclimatize and be mindful of altitude sickness. Enjoy the panoramic views of the snow-clad mountains.
Day 7: Return to Gangtok
The final day involves the journey back to Gangtok. The drive from Lachung to Gangtok (approx. 5-6 hours) offers a chance to reflect on your incredible journey through North Sikkim. As you leave the pristine landscapes behind, remember the solitude and serenity you found travelling solo in Sikkim. Upon arriving in Gangtok, you can either depart for your onward journey or spend an additional day exploring more of Sikkim, perhaps venturing to South or West Sikkim. The memories of your solo adventure in North Sikkim will undoubtedly last a lifetime.
