Disneyland in February: Weather, What to Pack, and What to See

Betsy has been writing about California for nearly more than two decades as TripSavvy’s expert on the state.

Take your sweetheart to Disneyland for Valentine’s Day

February may be Disneyland’s quietest month, after Haunted Mansion and It’s a Small World have re-opened and before spring break is in full swing. The parks’ opening hours are shorter than in the summer, but they aren’t crowded, and the wait times are short.

On the downside, nighttime parades and evening shows like World of Color, Fantasmic!, and the fireworks may not happen every day, especially during the week.

To celebrate Valentine’s Day, you may find heart-shaped balloons for sale and Valentine-themed foods.

Disneyland Crowds in February

In general, February is relatively uncrowded at Disneyland. If you go during the week, you may feel like you have the place almost all to yourself. President’s Day (third Monday of February) may bring slightly larger crowds.

Some folks say Disneyland is less busy on Super Bowl Sunday, but now that the secret’s out, too many people take advantage of the idea, and it gets more hectic than usual. If the winning team says they’re going to Disneyland to celebrate, expect crowds when they arrive as their fans flock to the park to see them.

If you have a hard time finding a hotel room at a reasonable rate when forecasted crowds are low and there aren’t any other events you know of, there might be a big convention going on at the Anaheim Convention Center, which is just across the street from Disneyland. You can check the schedule on their website.

Disneyland Weather in February

February is the rainiest month in Anaheim on average, and all of that rain sometimes falls on a single day. Disneyland never closes because of rain, but rides with outdoor tracks may close for safety precautions.

At the extremes, Anaheim’s record low temperature was 3 F (-1 C), and its record high was 108 F (42 C). Check the current Disneyland weather forecast a few days ahead for the best information.

February Closures at Disneyland

The less-busy season in terms of visitors is the busy time for the Disneyland maintenance team with major closures happening this time of year. Check touringplans.com for a list of rides that are expected to be closed for refurbishment.

Disneyland’s February Hours

Disneyland’s hours are generally shorter when the days are shorter. These are the typical hours in February, but California Adventure hours are often shorter than Disneyland’s. Check the official February hours up to 6 weeks in advance.

  • Monday through Thursday: Open 10 to 11 hours per day
  • Friday through Sunday: Open 11 to 16 hours per day

What to Pack

The best way to decide what to wear is to check the weather forecast a few days ahead.

On average, February is the rainiest month in Anaheim. If rain is predicted, take a poncho or hooded rain jacket, but we don’t recommend an umbrella. It’s hard to move around a theme park while carrying one, and they’re a nuisance to stow every time you want to go on a ride.

February temperatures can be cool to chilly, especially after the sun goes down. If you want to enjoy the water rides, wear something that will dry out quickly. Soggy blue jeans get annoyingly uncomfortable after a couple of hours. A simple plastic poncho will also help keep you dry while on the ride. If it all seems like too much to carry, you can rent a locker for just a couple of dollars.

Packing experts suggest creating a capsule wardrobe for travel. You can find suggestions for the number of tops, bottoms, layers, and shoes you need at Classy Yet Trendy. For Disneyland in February, choose short to mid-length sleeved tops, full-length bottoms, light to mid-weight outer layers that are rainproof if it’s in the forecast. Shoes should first and foremost be comfortable.

February Events at Disneyland

The Lunar New Year begins when the sun and moon begin their journey together for another year. In honor of that, California Adventure park puts on a celebration in Disney style, when you can enjoy Mulan’s Procession and other Asian-themed performances. You may find Disney characters in seasonal costumes, and you can participate in free arts and crafts activities. And even if it’s not the Year of the Pig, you can pig out on Asian-themed food with an unmistakable Disney twist. It usually starts toward the end of January, but you can check this year’s calendar for the schedule.

Disneyland in February Pros Disneyland in July- Avengers Campus Web Slingers attraction at night

Visiting Disneyland in February is a great time to visit because of the low crowd levels. This is easiest one of the biggest pros of visiting Disneyland this time of the year! Despite the activities that Lunar New Year holds most of the crowds that will come out to see this festival are the local annual passholders. This isn’t typically a popular time of year for tourists which often results in low to minimal crowd levels.

The one exception is Presidents Day which will be a busy weekend for the parks so if you can avoid visiting that time of the month.

If you want to get an idea of how the Alocals will impact the parks during your visit then I recommend reading through the blockout date calendar for Magic Key passes on Disneyland’s website. But February is the time of year that Disney typically allows all their passholders in the park with limited block out dates for lower tier passes such as weekends.

Another pro for visiting Disneyland in February is the mild weather. If you’re not a fan of the heat then visiting this time of the year can be nice since temperatures rarely go above the average high of 69 degrees.

Disneyland in February Cons

Refurbishments are one of the downsides to visiting Disneyland in February. Since the park considers February to be a slower time of the year they often plan length refurbishments to happen this time of the year especially as they prepare for Spring Break and Summer season. Check the Disneyland calendar before you arrive to see what rides may be down for maintenance.

Another con is that Disneyland might not have as longer operating hours as they do in the summer and holiday months. Disneyland’s operating hours average an opening schedule of 10 hours a day on weekdays with limited entertainment and weekends with longer hours ranging up to 16 hours a day and more entertainment options. Fireworks are often only scheduled on weekends this time of year as a courtesy to their neighbors in Anaheim so that is another consideration to take into account.

What is the Weather Like at Disneyland in February? Cars Land at Disneyland

The weather at Disneyland in February can vary depending on the week and there is a higher chance you may see rain compared to the summer months. The good thing about rain is if you arrive prepared (think ponchos and rain boots!) you can enjoy an empty park as everyone clears out due to the weather. Disneyland won’t close for rain but rides with outdoor tracks will for safety reasons so that’s something to keep in mind if it rains during your visit.

The average temperature for Anaheim in February is a high of 69 degrees and a low of 48 degrees. It can be quite warm in the sun and cooler at night so dress in layers so you’re ready for all temperatures. I usually rent a locker to store a heavier jacket in so I can put it away if the sun is out and I don’t need it.

We always think the pros outweigh the cons when planning a trip to Disneyland but it’s hard to beat the mild weather and potential for low crowds that visiting Disneyland in February offers.

Disneyland in February Tips

Here are a few tips when choosing February as your month to visit Disneyland:

  • Make dining reservations- don’t forget to make your dining reservations before you visit! You can make your dining reservations up to 60 days in advance of your trip. This is a must as popular restaurants will fill up!
  • Use Genie+ to Beat Lines- if you’re not familiar yet with Genie+ I recommend reading through our Genie+ guide so you have the best tips on how to maximize your time on your trip. Genie+ is a program that allows you to save your spot in line virtually and return later when the line is shorter by using the “Lightning Lane” which greater reduces your wait.
  • Check the weather- be sure to check the weather leading right up until your trip so you’re away of any trends that may influence your packing choices like rain, heat, etc.

Disneyland February Crowd Calendar Disneyland in February - Lunar New Year

Visiting Disneyland in February is always a great time because of the low crowd levels. Despite the activities that Lunar New Year holds most of the crowds that will come out to see this festival are the locals. This isn’t typically a popular time of year for tourists which often results in low to minimal crowd levels aside from California residents.

It’s always helpful to take a look at the blockout date calendar on Disney’s website. But February is the time of year that Disney typically allows all their Magic Key holders in the park with limited block out dates for lower tier passes such as weekends.

You can typically expect to see lower crowd levels in February. Keep in mind though that this will change with any holiday where K-12 typically has off for school like Presidents Day which occurs in February.

Disneyland Weather in February Entrance to the Monsters INC ride

Visiting Disneyland in February comes with typical California weather which often means rain! February is one of the months in Southern California that sees the most rain so it’s best to be prepared for that reality. Disneyland won’t close because of rain but rides with outdoor tracks often will close during rain. One good thing about experiencing rain at Disneyland is it tends to empty out the parks as many guests dash back to their hotels. This is a great time to throw on a rain poncho and experience low wait ride times.

Tips for Visiting Disneyland in February California Adventure pier at night

When it comes to visiting Disneyland in February, we have some tried and true hacks for having a magical time on your vacation.

What to Wear

One of the most frequently asked guest questions is: what should I wear to Disneyland? Always check the weather leading up to your trip. I always recommend guests wear layers when visiting during the winter in Southern California. You just never know what the weather might do- it could feel so sunny one day you’d want to be in shorts or be so chilly another day you want a winter coat! The good news is that you can rent lockers at Disneyland to store any light jackets or extra layers in. If rain is projected during your trip then dress for rain with warm layers and a rain jacket. The nights will feel really chilly and it’s not uncommon to see folks wearing light winter jackets.

What to Pack

Pack clothes for warm and cold weather so you’re prepared for any weather change. Hands down the most important item you cannot forget for at trip to Disneyland in February is a rain poncho. You don’t want to clear out when it starts raining because that’s when the ride times are the lowest! Carry a poncho with you so you can throw it on easily. Wear comfortable shoes that will work well in rainy weather and bring plenty of extra socks.

You can read our giant packing list here to make sure you show up prepared for literally anything you need while you’re visiting Disneyland.

What to Expect

There are a few things you should expect when choosing February as your month to visit Disneyland:

  • Plan for Rain- like we’ve said a few times already, you will likely encounter rain on your visit so be prepared! Set your expectations to not be disappointed if it does rain- this just means that you’ll get to ride more rides with lower wait times. Be prepared with the clothes you wear, bring a rain poncho, and know that the outdoor track rides may close for inclement weather.
  • Valentine’s Day- Disney has worked hard the past few years to make an effort to incorporate more seasonal celebration of Valentine’s Day in the park. Take the time to find all the seasonal desserts and enjoy the Minnie Mouse scavenger hunt.
  • Genie+ Replaced FastPass- the new Genie+ system is what permanently replaced FastPass at Disneyland. This paid access allows you to virtually reserve your spot in line for many popular attractions and skip the longer standby line.

But most of all, remember to enjoy your time at the happiest place on earth!
