Best Getaways in Northumberland

Northumberland hotels vary from the small B&B’s to grand castle hotel stays and hotels with golf courses. There are also numerous options for anyone looking for a quick day trip or a weekend getaway to a luxurious spa hotel. What is so special about Northumberland is its breathtakingly beautiful coastline, the surrounding nature and the and rich heritage of the county. The most of the iconic castles are within an easy reach from Newcastle upon Tyne and other bigger cities like Edinburgh in South East of Scotland. If you are on a longer tour and not looking for just a quick weekend get-away, you may enjoy taking the train along the North East coast of England. When the train pulls up to the Durham and Newcastle upon Tyne stations, the views are breath taking. The Durham roof tops and a magnificent view of the Durham Cathedral are unforgettable. And upon arrival to Newcastle, the view over the river Tyne and the eclectic mix of new and old architecture is just fabulous. The train track offers you glimpses of the blue sea on the way from Newcastle to Edinburgh. But next I will share which are my favourite spots to visit in Newcastle upon Tyne and which hotels are recommended. Here are the Northumberland hotels I recommend for couples, weekend getaways or golf and spa trips. The hotels offer high quality rooms and service to their guests, whether you are looking for hotels in Morpeth, small and independent boutique hotels anywhere in Northumberland, hotels near Alnwick Castle or hotels in Hexham.

Langley Castle in Hexham

The luxury hotel Langley Castle in Hexham, Northumberland

Imagine sleeping in a four posted bed in a real castle, followed by a fabulous breakfast which is carefully laid out for the guests celebrating a special occasion or just having a quick weekend break. Enjoy a very special afternoon tea and get treated like royalty of the castle. This is what the Langley Castle does best! The Langley Castle was built in the mid 14th century by Sir Thomas de Lucy. This H-shaped, four storey castle has since been attacked and damaged in 1405 by the troops of Henry IV. The castle was abandoned as a ruin for a long period of time, until a local historian called Cadwallader Bates bought and restored it around 1882. During the Second World War the Langley Castle was used as barracks, which was later turned into a girl’s school. In the 1980’s the Langley Castle changed hands a couple of times and was bought by a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1986. He turned the Langley Castle into a luxury hotel it is today. The Langley Castle is set in 10 acres of beautiful woodland estate in Hexham, South Northumberland. Check for Langley Castle prices and availability here.
